HAIR BOW, BOW TIE AND BOW WINGS
FOR ALL

LEVEL: BEGINNER

@ateliermimito #miamimito

The MIA tutorial is an easy pattern that allows you to create beautiful bows for a wide variety of use. The pattern comes in three different sizes and two different styles with the option to add a ribbon below the bow to create hair bows, clips, headbands and bow ties.

This tutorial also shows how to create a giant bow with scrunchie straps so that it can be worn as wings and used to decorate a staircase or a front door during the Christmas period. With a bit of imagination the possibilities are endless!

RECOMMENDED FABRICS

From lightweight to heavy-weight linen, silk satin, tencel, cotton twill, upholstery fabrics, velvet and any fabrics that are relatively easy to manipulate.
If making the smaller bows, a lightweight fabric will be best, but for the wings it is
recommended to use heavy-weight materials or to add interfacing to a light-weight fabric so the bow keeps its shape.

This pattern is a guideline that can be used for a variety of fabrics. Use your discretion for the most appropriate fabric to use and if you are not sure, look up the hashtag #miamimito on
Instagram for inspiration.

FABRIC USAGE

This pattern is great for using fabric from your remnant stash. Even the smallest scraps will suit. For the wings you will need about 1.5m x 1.5m of fabric.

Please note: If making the wings with a lightweigth fabric then iron-on interfacing might be
needed for the bow part so it stays up and keep its shape.

NOTIONS

- Fabric
- Matching threads
- Rubber band
- Glue gun (optional)
- Interfacing (For lightweight fabrics and for the wings)
- Elastic (For the wings and bow tie)

PDF SEWING PATTERN

Please note: This pattern contains two files. A PROJECTOR file  and a  PRINT AT HOME file.

The PROJECTOR file can be opened using Adobe Acrobat. Ensure your projector is calibrated and measure the check square to ensure the pattern is at the correct scale. If using dark-coloured fabric, change the colour setting of the projector file so the pattern and text are easier to see.

The Print At Home file can be printed at home with any standard printer at scale 100%. It contains only 3 pages and suits both A4 and US Letter printers. No pattern is needed for the wings. Measurements are given in the tutorial below and can be traced straight onto the fabric.

SEAM ALLOWANCES

All seam allowances are included on the pattern pieces and indicated in this tutorial.

Care Instructions

Caring for your fabrics is essential to maintain their appearance and longevity. Here are some essential fabric care tips to make your clothing last longer and look great.

First and foremost, always check the care label on your garments. While most fabrics benefit from similar care, certain items like wool may have specific instructions. For general care, wash your fabrics in cool or cold water. Hot water can degrade fibers and cause colors to fade.

Avoid using chlorine bleach or fabric softeners, as these can damage the fabric over time. Instead, choose a phosphate-free detergent. These gentle detergents clean effectively without harming your textiles.

When it comes to drying your clothes, it's best to tumble dry on a low setting. This helps prevent shrinking and unnecessary wear and tear. For the best results, dry similar colors together to avoid color transfer. If you want to maximize the longevity of your fabrics, consider line-drying your clothes. This method reduces the risk of damage from the dryer’s heat and can also save energy.

Ironing your fabrics? Always check the appropriate heat settings based on the type of fabric you are working with. Utilizing the right heat can help you avoid burns and preserve the integrity of your garments.

If you have any delicate items, laundering them in a mesh bag can provide extra protection during the wash cycle. Always be mindful of embellishments and finishes when caring for your fabrics.

Ultimately, proper fabric care ensures that your clothes continue to look fresh and new. By following these easy tips, you can enjoy your favorite garments for years to come.
