  • 1x 16L (3/8” or 10mm) button for the keyhole opening
  • Matching thread to your fabric
  • Self fabric (your main fabric)
  • 3/8” (10mm) or 1/2” (13mm) width ribbon / bias tape OR double fold bias tape

    Fabric Requirements:

The Float On Top will work in a wide variety of woven fabrications. The construction consists of a single layer of fabric on the front and back body with French seams and a double layer of fabric at the hem to add some extra weight as well as clean finishes. Light to mid-weight woven fabrics will work well. Choose a fabric with more drape for a more fluid garment and choose a fabric with more structure for a more architectural design. A stabler fabric will be more beginner friendly. Use a contrasting ribbon or bias tape for the neckline and armholes to draw attention to the lovely details or match the ribbon or bias tape for a minimalist, sophisticated look. You really can’t go wrong with what materials you choose for this top - it’ll look great in anything! ;)

    Fit Recommendation:

The Float On Top fits closely from the neckline to the chest and then flares out for a dreamy, flowy swoosh. Along the bottom half of the top, there should be plenty of wiggle room for all sorts of dance moves. Choose your size based primarily on your high bust and full bust measurements, since those will be the most fitted part of your garment. If you fall in between sizes, choose the smaller size. There is plenty of ease so no need to worry! The vertical side seams do not rest on the side of your body, nor do they fall directly at a “true princess seam” placement. Bringing the side seam slightly more forward creates flattering style lines and accentuates the overall shape of the top.

Find the size that corresponds closest to your personal measurements in the size chart below. Patterns are designed for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person. The following measurements are needed to determine your size:

HIGH BUST | The circumference above your chest, under arms, and below your shoulder blades

FULL BUST | The fullest part of your chest, often times across the apex

WAIST | The smallest part of your torso, directly underneath your rib cage and above your hip bones

LOW HIP | The widest part of your hips, patterns drafted for 8” below the waistline

    Care Instructions

Caring for your fabrics is essential to maintain their appearance and longevity. Here are some essential fabric care tips to make your clothing last longer and look great.

First and foremost, always check the care label on your garments. While most fabrics benefit from similar care, certain items like wool may have specific instructions. For general care, wash your fabrics in cool or cold water. Hot water can degrade fibers and cause colors to fade.

Avoid using chlorine bleach or fabric softeners, as these can damage the fabric over time. Instead, choose a phosphate-free detergent. These gentle detergents clean effectively without harming your textiles.

When it comes to drying your clothes, it's best to tumble dry on a low setting. This helps prevent shrinking and unnecessary wear and tear. For the best results, dry similar colors together to avoid color transfer. If you want to maximize the longevity of your fabrics, consider line-drying your clothes. This method reduces the risk of damage from the dryer’s heat and can also save energy.

Ironing your fabrics? Always check the appropriate heat settings based on the type of fabric you are working with. Utilizing the right heat can help you avoid burns and preserve the integrity of your garments.

If you have any delicate items, laundering them in a mesh bag can provide extra protection during the wash cycle. Always be mindful of embellishments and finishes when caring for your fabrics.

Ultimately, proper fabric care ensures that your clothes continue to look fresh and new. By following these easy tips, you can enjoy your favorite garments for years to come.
